As interest in vegetarianism has grown, the variety and quality of vegetarian options has increased as well. Today, it is easy to get tasty meatless food at a wide variety of establishments, some of them quite surprising. To mark VSDC's 75th anniversary, we polled our members and other local vegetarians to compile this list of 75 restaurants, shops, and other services that make vegetarian living in the Washington, DC, area delightful.
The resulting list reflects the tremendous diversity of our area. There are trendy nightspots, like the Reef and Food For Thought Café in the Black Cat; venerable local institutions like Ben's Chili Bowl; family-friendly local chains such as Silver Diner and Hard Times Café; and the best vegetarian dishes in the culinary traditions of many nations as presented by the area's finest ethnic restaurants.
If you're just beginning to explore meatless eating, you'll find that there are tasty treats right around the corner, and world's worth of delightful options within a short drive from the Capital Beltway. Even if you're a long-time area vegetarian, you'll likely encounter some delights you never knew existed.
We have tried to select Delights that are either vegan (free of all animal products), or easily made so with the omission of a few optional ingredients. Even so, we urge list users to check with the restaurants to ensure that the Delights or other menu items meet their individual dietary and other dining needs. An interactive guide with clickable map and more information on most list items will be available soon. You can request a printed 21"x17" map and guide by contacting VSDC (vsdc.org). Comments on the list can be sent to 75delights@vsdc.org. Additional suggested delights will be added to the web and mentioned in the newsletter.
