2015 VSDC Life-Affirming Thanksgiving

people at a round table enjoying dinnerThe Vegetarian Society of DC (VSDC) Life-Affirming Thanksgiving is an annual event that brings together vegetarians and non-vegetarians to enjoy compassionate and healthy food and a wonderful social setting.

The 2015 VSDC Life-Affirming Thanksgiving was held November 26 at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, Md.

2015 Keynote Speaker
Terry Cummings, director and co-founder of Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary

Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary is a 400-acre non-profit refuge for farm animals and wildlife located in Poolesville, Md. Their mission is to offer care, rehabilitation, and permanent sanctuary for neglected, abused or abandoned farm animals, to provide protected habitat for wildlife, to furnish information to the public regarding farm animal and wildlife issues, and to promote compassion and humane treatment for all animals.

Terry spoke about the wonderful animals at the sanctuary and shared pictures and stories of their now-joyful lives.

  • Vegan magician Michael Worsham (aka “Magic Michael”)  joined us for a kids magic show and close-up magic throughout the program.
  • Musical guest Stephen Svoboda entertained us on acoustic guitar, playing flamenco and bossa nova music.

The Washington Humane Society (WHS) has been the DC area’s leading voice of compassion for pets and wildlife since 1870! WHS provides comfort and care to nearly 30,000 animals each year through monetary and in-kind donations. VSDC will accept donations from the Washington Humane Society’s wish list at our Thanksgiving event.

So Others May Eat (SOME) is a community-based organization that exists to help the poor and homeless of our nation’s capital. They meet the immediate daily needs of the people they serve with food, clothing, and health care, in addition to services to help break the cycle of homelessness. At this event, VSDC collected healthy, nonperishable vegan food items for SOME’s food bank.
